Often song pages on this site are used for visitors to converse about the meaning of the song's lyrics. Extended conversations on this subject can be viewed on the Blink 182 - Adam's Song page, the Finger Eleven - One Thing page and the Nickelback - Figured You Out page.
My favourite conversation on the meaning of a song's lyrics, however, can be found on the Toadies - Possum Kingdom page.
I've been a huge fan of this awesome tune since the first time I heard it and it appeared on SLS4. The lyrics tell a chilling tale about a young woman who is taken out behind a boathouse. Religious imagery abounds with references to angels and Jesus. Clearly the narrator has something in store for this woman, but what?
Judging from the 34 posts thus far, there are two main schools of thought on the subject. It's either about a murder around Lake Possum Kingdom in Texas or it's about a vampire.
People from Texas have commented that a rape and murder did occur around this lake about twenty years ago but nobody has been able to substantiate this claim with a link to an article about the death. Starme even quoted an interview with the band in which they claim it's simply a ghost story.
On the vampire front, those who believe it's about a vampire are sure passionate about it. They always refer to the line about dark hair and soft skin forever.
Then again, FunkyCold thinks it's about necrophilia, sarah mascara thinks it's about a sado-masochistic relationship and Jacob believes it's a homage to a poem by Robert Browning called "Porphyria's Lover".
Any way you slice it, you've got to love "Possom Kingdom" and the many theories on what it's about.
